There is nothing that makes an impact in your garden like large garden statues.  They provide a focal point that your garden can be centered around and help keep your garden looking great even in the winter time.

When you are selecting a large garden statue you will want to keep in mind the amount of space that you have to use as well as your personal style.  The more space you have the bigger your statue can be.

Also pay attention to the type of material that you choose.  The most common materials are resin, concrete, metal (often copper or bronze), and marble.  All of these materials are durable and well suited to garden sculptures.  Concrete and resin are generally less expensive than copper or marble.

When placing large garden statues there are two basic schools of thought.  You can make the sculpture the centerpiece of your garden and light it with outdoor solar lights, or you can have it blend in.

Border gardens often work the best for blending sculptures in.  In this type of garden, your plants will surround your green space.  These types of gardens are quite often quite big and you can use a large sculpture to draw attention to an area that you particularly want to highlight.

Island gardens are great for making your sculpture the center of attention.  You can place your large garden statue in the middle of the bed and plant your flowers and shrubs around it.  This approach can be both whimsical or formal depending on the sculpture and plants that you choose.

When you are planning a formal bed, be sure to plan it out on paper first.  This way you can get a good idea of how it will look as your plant mature.

The first step in figuring out which  will suit you is to decide on what style or type of statue you want.  Here are some broad categories to get you started.

Garden gnomes: These funny little guys come in tons of poses and  have been around for about 300 years.  Garden gnomes are thought to bring luck and good fortune when placed in your garden.  They are perfect for people with a whimsical side.

Religious garden statues: People choose religious garden decorations for many reasons.  Some people want to express their faith while others just like using a religious symbol as an expresion of tranquility. Some of the most popular religous symbols include St. Francis - the patron saint of animals - and Buddha.  Sacred statues are best appreciated when given a special space in your garden.

Disney garden statues: Disney characters are beloved American icons and are always popular.  Mickey Mouse and the seven dwarfs are among the most popular, but you can get them in almost any character you choose.   These offer an air of whimsy.

Cat garden statues: (and dogs, and wolves, and dolphins)  Animals are always popular garden decorations and are often featured in garden fountains.  They can range from sophisticated to cute to anywhere in between.  I personally have a small frog statue in my garden, and get many compliments on him.

Large garden statues: When it comes to making an impact on people visiting your garden, nothing compares to a large statue.  Just be sure that you design your garden around a large piece so it doesn't get lost in the flowers.  One of the best things about a large garden piece is that it provides a focal point in your garden even during dormant months - a big bonus for those of us in cold winter climates.

Garden fountains: These will provide not only visual interest, but also the calming sound of running water.  Be sure to get a quality pump and keep your fountain clean and full.  Garden fountains are beautiful, but they do require more maintainance than other forms of garden sculpture.
